2007 is set to be a crucial year for local government. Legislation will follow the Local Government White Paper. The Lyons Review will have reported and this will lead into the Chancellor’s Comprehensive Spending Review, which will be the most comprehensive review of Government’s spending priorities in ten years.
Such a time of change presents central and local government with a real opportunity to deliver effective devolution. However, devolving power from the centre is fraught with difficulties, often resulting in either too little power or often a lack of join up between policies.
The fifth NLGN annual conference brings together Phil Woolas MP, Minister for Local Government and Community Cohesion, with other senior Government speakers to look ahead and ask what are the opportunities and challenges in the coming year, including new financial settlements.
