As neighbourhood friction continues to challenge public agencies – grappling with youth violence, drugs and gang culture – are today’s local councils equipped to intervene and lessen social tensions? With national Government too distant from the frontline work with disadvantaged families and young people, how should the modern local authority change its approach and what role does local leadership play? Is there an acceptable role for the local state in working with young people outside school and beyond SureStart, and if so what should this be? And how could Ministers help local authorities coordinate family and social policy work more effectively?
This event, organised by the New Local Government Network will explore these and wider issues with keynote speaker Harriet Harman QC MP, Minister for Family Justice at the Department for Constitutional Affairs and Steve Reed, Leader of Lambeth Council.
The event will take place from 5.00-6.30pm on Thursday 19th April 2007.
