Launch event – Whitehall’s Spatial Awareness: Rewiring the centre for a new era of devolved government

Wednesday, 11 February 2009
One Whitehall Place, Westminster, London

4.00-5.30pm
supported by Arup and The Northern Way

Invited speakers include:
Nick Brown MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury (confirmed)
Sir Gus O’Donnell, Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service (confirmed)
Liam Byrne MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster

This seminar will consider how well Whitehall is responding to the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly devolved approach to public policy. The report looks at how central government can become more outward looking and more understanding of the varying policy needs of different localities, cities and regions.

Attend this seminar to hear a range of proposals which include:
– a strengthened role for regional ministers and reform of Government Offices in the English regions and
- ways in which performance assessment in Whitehall can be improved and experience of local government and front-line delivery amongst senior civil servants can become more embedded.
