There is a pressing need for local authorities to deliver new longer term solutions to the waste challenge that will be financially, environmentally and politically beneficial. Relying on landfill is no longer a sustainable option. Unless action is taken quickly, local authorities will face millions of pounds a day in fines that will be paid for by its communities.
The report, ‘Time to Waste?’, will explore the key barriers faced by local authorities in the establishment of more sustainable waste management practices and how these barriers can be overcome, and will highlight good examples of where councils are actively tackling waste in their areas. We offer recommendations on how local authorities can reduce the amount of landfill created and encourage households to recycle, as well as promote waste efficiency in the public sector.
